Rise in EV Registrations – The Work Does Not End Here!
A report by Automotive News shows that electric vehicle registrations have increased by 60% in the first quarter of 2022. This shows that the registrations of electronic vehicles are increasing in America becoming more mainstream.
Tesla’s EV took the lead, having a 72% increase in registrations with 113,882 vehicles. Kia has 8,450 new registrations and came second. Ford was in third place with 7,407 registrations. Additionally, Hyundai also had a handsome increase with 6,984 registrations.
It is anticipated that as gas prices stay on the rise, EV purchasing will continue to grow. There was an overall decrease of 18% in all new car sales in the first three months.
An increase in EVs means a higher demand for charging stations. Charging infrastructure and range anxiety are two concerns of EV users. The Biden administration has announced a long term goal to build almost 500,000 charging stations for the public by the end of 2030. Today, the number of EVs outnumbers the chargers available. In California, there is one EV charger for every 12.23 EVs.
Cities need to think of other ways to combat the battle to lower emissions. Cities are starting to encourage cycling and walking. For example, Paris is thinking of banning vehicles from coming into the city center. This will make the place safer for cycling and walking and reduce harmful emissions. In New York, there are walking-only spaces. However, most larger cities in the U.S. have not come up with significant plans to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
On top of EV on the road, we need to look to developing better public transportation. We can help lower emission with more effective public transit. We look at Los Angeles, most people rely heavily on car transportation. They are looking to offer a stipend for residents to use public transportation, but they need to think long-term and come up with better public transportation in densely populated areas.
EVs are indeed a good alternative and environment-friendly. This increased use of EVs will help us lower emission. We need to understand that EV usage and popularity is growing and needs to keep growing for our environment. At Vehya, we are committed to helping EV mobility throughout North America, we are proud to help EV infrastructure grow.
